Reading a chart · 身强身弱

Is your Day Master strong or weak?

This is the judgment a BaZi reading turns on. Almost everything else — your favorable element, which luck cycles lift you and which strain you, the advice a chart gives — is downstream of one question: does your chart leave your Day Master with too much energy, or too little? Get this right and the rest follows. Get it wrong and the whole reading tilts.

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the single character that stands for you. "Strong" (身强) and "weak" (身弱) describe how well that character is supported by the other seven characters around it. It is not a verdict on your character or your luck. It is a balance reading, and balance is the whole game.

The three tests

Classical analysis weighs the Day Master three ways. The first carries the most weight by far.

In season

De ling 得令

Were you born in a season that feeds your element? The month branch sets the season and dominates the whole judgment. A Wood Day Master born in spring is fed by its own season and starts strong; the same Wood born in autumn, the season of Metal that cuts it, starts weak.

Rooted

De di 得地

Does the Day Master have roots in the earthly branches beneath the stems — above all the day branch, the seat it sits on? A stem with a matching root in the branches stands its ground; a stem with no root floats and weakens, however many allies sit beside it.

In numbers

De shi 得势

How many of the other characters are on your side? Count the allies — Peers of the same element and Resource that produces it — against the forces that drain you. Strength in numbers across the chart is the third leg of the judgment.

The five roles: who strengthens, who drains

Every other character relates to your Day Master as one of five roles — the Ten Gods grouped by what they do to your energy. Two add to you; three spend it.

Strengthens you

  • Resource (). The element that produces yours — Water feeding Wood, Wood feeding Fire. It pours energy in.
  • Peers (比劫). The same element as your Day Master. Allies that stand with you and add weight to your side.

Drains you

  • Output (食伤). The element you produce. Making it spends your energy, like effort poured into work.
  • Wealth (). The element you control. Holding it down costs you steady effort.
  • Authority (官杀). The element that controls you. It pushes against the Day Master directly.

Weigh the two boxes — with the season as the heavy thumb on the scale. More support than drain, and the Day Master is strong. More drain than support, and it is weak.

Why it matters: strength sets your favorable element

Here is why the strong-or-weak call is worth getting right. It points straight to the chart's favorable element (用神) — the element the chart most needs to come into balance, and the lens almost every other reading is filtered through.

So "strong" and "weak" are not grades. They are a switch that flips which half of the chart is helping you — and a strong chart and a weak chart with the same favorable element will read more alike than two strong charts that need opposite things.

Why a quick head-count misleads

It is tempting to simply tally the characters — three Wood, two Water, count them up. Real strength rarely yields to a head-count, for a few reasons:

This is why strength is a weighing, not a tally — and why a computed chart, which scores the season, roots, hidden stems, and combinations together, is more reliable than counting by eye.
