Your four pillars are fixed the moment you are born — they do not change. So how does a chart describe a life that does change? Through the Luck Pillars (大运, Dà Yùn): a second, moving layer of ten-year cycles that pass over your fixed chart like weather moving across a landscape.
What a Luck Pillar is
Each Luck Pillar is one Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch — the same building block as a natal pillar — that governs roughly ten years of your life. For that decade, its elements are added to your chart's mix, shifting the balance the same way an extra guest changes the dynamic at a table.

Where they come from
Luck Pillars are not random. They are generated from your month pillar, then stepped through the sixty-stem-and-branch cycle in one direction:
- Direction depends on two things: the polarity of your birth year's stem, and your sex. Yang-year males and yin-year females count forward through the cycle; yin-year males and yang-year females count backward.
- Starting age comes from the distance between your birth and the nearest solar term. That is why one person's first Luck Pillar begins at age 2 and another's at age 9.
From there each pillar simply runs for about ten years before the next takes over.
How to read a decade
The question for any Luck Pillar is the same one the whole chart turns on: does it bring the element your chart favors?
- A pillar carrying your favorable element tends to be a supportive, opening decade — the wind at your back.
- A pillar that piles on an element you already have too much of, or brings what your chart struggles with, tends to be a more demanding stretch.
- The pillar's branch can also combine or clash with the branches in your natal chart, quietly strengthening or unsettling part of it.

Luck Pillars are easy to mistake for fortune-telling. They are not. They describe the changing conditions a fixed chart moves through — more or less supportive, more or less demanding — not a script of what will happen. The landscape is yours; the Luck Pillar is only the season passing over it.
