What do yin and yang mean in BaZi?

Yin and yang are the most basic polarity behind the whole system. Yang is the active, outward, expanding mode; yin is the receptive, inward, consolidating mode. They are not good and bad, or strong and weak — they are two complementary directions, and everything in a chart, every stem and every branch, carries one of them.

Is my Day Master yin or yang?

It depends on your day's Heavenly Stem. Each of the five elements has a yang and a yin form: Yang Wood (Jia) and Yin Wood (Yi), Yang Fire (Bing) and Yin Fire (Ding), and so on. If your Day Master is Yang Wood you express Wood outwardly, like a tall tree; if Yin Wood, more flexibly, like a vine. Same element, different polarity, different character.

How does polarity affect the Ten Gods?

Polarity is exactly what doubles the five element relationships into ten gods. For each relationship, another character that shares your Day Master's polarity gives the rawer, self-directed version of the role, while the opposite polarity gives the more regulated version. For instance the element your Day Master produces is Output: same polarity makes the Eating God, different polarity makes the Hurting Officer.

Yin and yang: the first split.

Before the five elements, before the Ten Gods, before anything else, there is one division that everything in a BaZi chart rests on: yin and yang (阴阳, Yīn Yáng). It is the simplest idea in the system and the one most quietly doing the work.

Two directions, not two grades

Yang is the active, outward, expanding mode — daylight, motion, the impulse to push out and rise. Yin is the receptive, inward, consolidating mode — shade, stillness, the impulse to draw in and settle. Crucially, neither is better. They are not strong and weak or good and bad; they are two complementary halves that only make sense against each other.

Yang 阳

Active, outward, expanding, bright, fast. The tree, the sun, the ocean — element expressed boldly and visibly.

Yin 阴

Receptive, inward, consolidating, quiet, slow. The vine, the candle, the dew — element expressed softly and adaptively.

Every stem and branch carries one

Each of the ten Heavenly Stems is one element in a yang or a yin form — the same element, two temperaments. The branches alternate yang and yin around the wheel as well. This is where the ten Day Masters come from: five elements, each split in two.

So if your Day Master is Yang Wood (甲) you express Wood like a tall tree — upright, structural, slow to bend. If it is Yin Wood (乙) you express the same Wood like a vine — flexible, resourceful, finding its way around. Same element, opposite temperament. That single difference colours how the whole chart reads.

Why polarity splits the Ten Gods

Here is the quiet work yin and yang do. The Ten Gods come from five element relationships — but each relationship divides in two by polarity. When another character shares your Day Master's polarity, you get the rawer, more self-directed version of the role; when it is the opposite polarity, you get the more regulated, "proper" version.

The element your Day Master produces, for example, is Output. Same polarity makes it the easy, natural Eating God; opposite polarity makes it the sharper, rule-breaking Hurting Officer. Five relationships, doubled by polarity, give exactly ten. Without yin and yang there would be only five gods, and the whole chart would lose half its detail.
