Zi Wei Dou Shu, explained.
Most people who find Chinese astrology meet BaZi first. But there is a second great system, just as old and just as detailed: Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数) — "Purple Star Astrology." Instead of elements, it reads your life as a map of named stars across twelve palaces.
If BaZi is the chemistry of your chart — five elements interacting, balancing, draining — Zi Wei is the geography. It lays out twelve houses of life, drops a cast of stars into them, and reads the resulting map. The two are not rivals; traditionally they are read side by side, and Bornchart computes both from the same birth details.
What Zi Wei Dou Shu actually is
The name breaks down literally. Zi Wei (紫微) is the Purple Star — in old Chinese astronomy, the pole star, the emperor of the sky. Dou Shu (斗数) means roughly "calculation by the stars." So: the system that calculates your life from the Emperor Star and its court.
From your birth year, month, day, and hour, the system builds a chart of twelve palaces and places around a hundred stars into them — a handful of major stars and many minor ones. Where each star lands, and which palace it colors, is what a Zi Wei reading interprets. Like BaZi, it is computed deterministically from the calendar; nothing about the placement is guessed.
BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu
They answer the same question — what is this person like, and how does their life move — in two completely different languages.
- BaZi works with eight characters: four pillars, each a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, read through the Five Elements and the Day Master. It is elemental and relational.
- Zi Wei Dou Shu works with stars and houses: twelve palaces, each a domain of life, lit up by the stars that fall into it. It is spatial and specific.

The twelve palaces
Every Zi Wei chart is divided into twelve palaces (十二宫). Each governs one domain of life, and the stars sitting in it describe how that domain tends to play out.
The stars
Stars are what fill the palaces. The fourteen major stars do most of the work — among them Zi Wei itself (the Emperor), Tian Fu (the Treasury), Tian Ji (the Strategist), Tai Yang (the Sun), Wu Qu (the General), and Tian Tong (the Child). A bright, well-placed major star in a palace reads very differently from an unlucky one or an empty palace borrowing from across the chart. Minor stars and the "four transformations" (四化) then fine-tune the reading, marking which stars are amplified, rewarded, troubled, or held back.
You do not need to memorize any of this to read your own chart. The point of computing it is that the placement is exact, and the interpretation is built on top of a fixed, reproducible map.
Why your exact birth time matters here
Zi Wei is even more time-sensitive than BaZi. The whole palace structure rotates with your birth hour, so a two-hour error can move stars into entirely different palaces — putting a major star in Career instead of Marriage, for instance. For a meaningful Zi Wei chart you want your birth time as precisely as you can get it. If you only know it roughly, the BaZi side of your chart is more forgiving and still worth reading.
