What is the difference between BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu?

They use the same birth data but different building blocks. BaZi (Four Pillars) turns your birth into eight characters — stems and branches — and reads them through the five elements, the Day Master, and the Ten Gods. Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) places over a hundred named stars into twelve life palaces such as wealth, career, and marriage. Which is more accurate, BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu?

Neither is more accurate — they are strong at different things, and many practitioners use both. BaZi excels at temperament, the overall arc of a life, and timing through luck pillars. Zi Wei Dou Shu excels at granular, domain-by-domain detail, because each of its twelve palaces describes a specific area of life. A common approach is to read BaZi for the shape of the whole and Zi Wei for the close-ups.

Do you need a birth time for both?

Both work best with a birth time, but Zi Wei Dou Shu depends on it more heavily, because the hour determines how the stars fall into the twelve palaces. BaZi can still read six of its eight characters without the hour. If your birth time is unknown, BaZi degrades more gracefully than Zi Wei.
