Chinese zodiac compatibility, the real logic.

"Which signs go together?" has a real traditional answer — but it is not a list of lucky pairs someone made up. It comes from how the twelve Earthly Branches behave toward each other: which ones harmonize, which ones clash. Here is the actual structure, and then the honest caveat about how much your year animal alone can tell you.

The four harmony trines (三合 San He)

The cleanest form of compatibility. The twelve animals split into four groups of three, and each trine pools into one of the five elements. Animals in the same trine tend to understand and support each other.

Water trine 申子辰
RatDragonMonkey
Wood trine 亥卯未
RabbitSheepPig
Fire trine 寅午戌
TigerHorseDog
Metal trine 巳酉丑
SnakeRoosterOx

The six pairings (六合 Liu He)

A second harmony layer: six pairs that "lock" together, each a close and binding match. Where a trine is a friendly group, a Liu He pair is more like a partnership.

Rat Ox
Tiger Pig
Rabbit Dog
Dragon Rooster
Snake Monkey
Horse Sheep

The six clashes (六冲 Liu Chong)

Each animal sits directly opposite one other on the twelve-branch wheel, and those opposites clash — the two pull in different directions. A clash is not a sentence of doom; it marks friction two people have to work with consciously rather than a match that cannot work.

Rat Horse
Ox Sheep
Tiger Monkey
Rabbit Rooster
Dragon Dog
Snake Pig

Why two animals is not the whole story

Here is the honest part most compatibility charts skip. Your zodiac animal is only your year pillar — one of the eight characters in a full BaZi chart. Reading a relationship from year animals alone is like judging two songs by their first note.

Real BaZi compatibility compares two whole charts: both Day Masters and how they relate, whether each person supplies the element the other needs, and the harmonies and clashes across all four pillars — not just the year. This is why two people whose year animals "clash" can be deeply compatible once the full charts are read, and why two animals in the same trine can still struggle. The animal match is a fun doorway. The chart is the room.

Compare two full charts, not two animals.

Bornchart's compatibility reading puts two complete BaZi charts side by side — Day Masters, elements, and the harmonies and clashes across every pillar — instead of a single year-animal verdict.
