How to read a BaZi chart.
A BaZi chart looks like a wall of unfamiliar characters, but a reading is not a free-for-all — it follows an order. Each step sets up the next, and once you know the sequence the wall turns into a story. Here is the order a real reading actually moves in.
Find your Day Master
Start with the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. This is your Day Master — the one character that represents you. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it, so nothing else has a meaning until you have found it.
Judge its strength
Is the Day Master strong or weak? Weigh three things: the season it was born in (the month branch), whether it has roots in the branches, and how many allies support it. This is a weighing, not a head-count — hidden stems and clashes change the math.
Find the favorable element
Strength points to the chart's favorable element (用神). A strong Day Master wants outlets that spend its energy; a weak one wants support that rebuilds it. This single answer is the lens almost everything else is filtered through.
Read the Ten Gods
Now name the roles. Each other character is a Ten God — Resource, Peers, Output, Wealth, or Officer — telling you where the themes of resource, rivalry, talent, money, and authority sit in your chart.
Weigh the five elements
Step back and look at the five-element balance across all eight characters — what is abundant, what is missing, and how the yin and yang fall. This colours the temperament the chart describes.
Add the luck pillars
Finally, set the chart in motion. The luck pillars are ten-year cycles that wash favorable or demanding elements over the fixed chart, and the annual year layers on top. This is the timing — when the chart's potential is supported and when it is tested.
Where it gets hard
The structure above is learnable in an afternoon. The genuinely hard part is step 2 — weighing strength — because the season carries more weight than a count, roots matter more than visible allies, and combinations and clashes can quietly transform an element before you ever tally it.
